The bird bath is a ceramic saucer previously used for a large potted plant. I was sitting low and used a narrow depth of field. The result was a very dark background but it had some clutter that I removed. I felt a background that included a hint of vegetation in compatible colors would add to the picture. I experimented with various plants growing on our property until I found something that I felt add to the picture. They build multiple nests usually that from a distance look like a clump of dried grass and weeds stuck in a tree or cactus. The entrance is usually hidden on the side. They are almost always found in pairs especially during the mating and nesting season. Their calls are often the first thing you will hear in the morning. They are also very common birds around my home. They often sit still for long periods of time making them excellent subjects for photographs. On our property we have several large mesquite trees that were killed in the Monument Fire in 2011. Their skeletal remains are favorite resting spots for these doves. From a distance these birds often just look like a drab grey bird but close up the browns, grey and blacks have a slight iridescence of blue, just barely visible in this photograph on the back of the neck and on the back between the wings. The colors are more intense and yet soft and warm. I was lucky to capture this picture late in the afternoon. For years I had noticed a few around the yard from time to time. A few years ago while observing other birds in one of our pine trees I spotted a vermillion flycatcher returning to spot high in the tree where I eventually found a nest. That year we had two young flycatchers hatch and successfully fledge. Two years ago a vermillion flycatcher nested in a mesquite tree along our driveway. That provided an opportunity to see them almost everyday and to follow their hunting patterns. They frequently return to the same perch between flights grabbing an insect. That enabled me to get many pictures. Usually they remain together in large flocks for all activities. However, one very cold morning I found this pair along one of the irrigation canals resting in the early morning light. They really didn’t want to be bothered and certainly didn’t want to move. I was able to get the picture and not disturb them. I converted the original to black and white because it helped reduce the clutter and distraction of the background. In the wash behind where I was setup and getting ready for lunch, I noticed all three birds land on the remains of a failed burnt out oak tree. I created this picture and made something I like out of a slightly out of focus picture of hundreds of cranes at Whitewater Draw. I cropped a very small portion of a large photograph of many birds and concentrated on just three. I removed the background and attempted to create a new background. Initially the purpose was to create an image that I could use as a basis for a painting. All viewing of the wolves is through smoked glass which only allows one way viewing. It also makes photography very difficult. Luckily the day we visited was a low tourist day and I was able to spend the time required to figure out a way to get a good image through the viewing area. Human contact with the wolves is minimized and every attempt is made to insure the wolves remain wild without losing their fear of man. It is a very spiritual place, in my view more so than most churches. The location has been used for many generations and continues today. I felt privileged to be there. It was a very peaceful setting with magnificent views all around. I noticed movement while out working in the yard and saw that there was a hawk dancing around something in the yard. It was midday and there were dark shadows and very brightly lit areas. The hawk was alternating between them as he was right on the edge of a shadow. I quietly moved away and got my camera and came back to the area. He was still there but this time he had a snake clenched in his foot. He flew to a mesquite tree and I snapped this picture. The original version was very dark with a very bright background. In order to get a decent picture it required significant a significant manipulation of the “raw” file. I changed the background but the bird and snake are only enhanced to make them more visible and closer to what I actually saw. I often work pictures to make them more like I actually viewed them or to make them represent what I want the visitor to see. I think this is a valid objective of photography as an art rather than simply a second of an event. This was taken in February on a cold misty morning at Bosque del Apache in New Mexico. To get the image I desired, I had to remove other birds and a whole lot of distracting and messy reeds, etc. Once again this is a photograph that has been manipulated to represent the vision I had for it rather than reality. The pose by the two birds however, is exactly the way it was. It may be used for our Christmas card for 2022. The tree they are hanging from is one of two antique bronze trees that we bought quite a while ago. We decorate both of them with ornaments from the Glass-Eye Studio in Seattle. The biggest problem in getting this picture is getting the lighting right with enough transparency while minimizing glare. It also required rearranging the ornaments for the best spacing and color. I am pleased with the final outcome.
